Siphon Draw to Flat Iron!

This location is shown only to members

This hike is rated VERY DIFFICULT!

Join us for a hike on the Siphon Draw Trail #53 up to the Flat Iron! This trek starts out in the Lost Dutchman State Park and offers amazing views of the Superstition Mountains, the Flat Iron and Four Peaks. More beauty awaits as you pass through Tonto National Forest and the Superstition Wilderness.  The latter half provides an extremely strenuous climb to the top but is well worth the effort. We'll break for a while there before coming back down. You're encouraged to bring snacks, sun protection of some sort and must bring at least 3+ liters of water per person and sturdy hiking footwear.

DISTANCE: 6 miles roundtrip
ELEVATION GAIN: 2800 ft
TRAIL STYLE: In-and-out style
DURATION: 4+ hours
DOGS: No, have mercy!
FACILITIES: Bathrooms and water
WEBSITE: State Park
DIRECTIONS: Take US-60 east to exit 196, then turn north to HWY-88 (Idaho Rd).  Follow this road about 7 miles through Apache Junction, the state park should be on your right hand side.  There is a $7.00 entry fee for the park.  Park by the Siphon Draw Trailhead on this map.

I did this hike yesterday just to see if i could make it to the top before joining this group on the trip. You aren't lying when you say it is very difficult! I am not very fit, but i made it to the top!

Is there a good carpool location along the way (perhaps near the AZ-101 / US-60 intersection?)

How about Bass Pro Shop at the 202 and Dobson? It is just east of the 101 and a straight shot east on the 202 to Brown Rd , Hwy 88 and into the park.

I'll meet at Bass Pro at 8am. I know part of this hike is hands on climbing, but for how much of hike might poles be useful?

Poles are good for the 1st two miles and they always help my tired knees on the way back so I think they are very useful.

I would like to meet at Bass Pro also. Is there enough room for me to carpool with someone?

I could also meet at Bass Pro, I live by there. If there are enough car poolers, i can offer to take a few people in my Passat. Let me know, 480-343-6001.

Does a Maricopa Park Pass get you into the park?

Perfect day for this hike. Thank you all for coming out. Everyone made it to the flat iron. Some adventurers even went a little higher. Glad you made it Bob, and a flat tire did not stop you.

Thanks Eric! This was the most amazing day! I can't believe the beauty of the area. It really challenged me to push way beyond my comfort zone, but I am so grateful for the chance to have that hiking adventure and I met some really great people too!
